Snowboarding is the absolute highlight of winter for many of us. In order to enjoy the best descents and keep your board in top condition, it is important to maintain your snowboard regularly. A well-maintained snowboard not only improves your performance, but also extends the life of the board. In this article, we'll go over how to properly maintain your snowboard and why it's important.
Why is Snowboard Maintenance Important?
Regular maintenance of the snowboard helps:
- To maintain the performance of the board base and edges.
- To improve the glide and controllability of the board.
- To extend the life of the board.
- To prevent possible damage and problems on the slope.
Snowboard Maintenance Steps
1. Cleaning
Before maintenance procedures, it is important to thoroughly clean the board. Remove all snow, dirt and other impurities from the bottom and covers of the board. You can use a soft brush and warm water for cleaning. Make sure the board is completely dry before proceeding to the next steps.
2. Edge sharpening
The sharpness of the edges significantly affects the controllability of the board, especially on icy slopes. Sharpen the edges using an edge sharpener or a file. Hold the file at a 90-degree angle to the edge and pull evenly along the entire length of the edge. Remember to sharpen both the side and bottom edges of the board.
3. Bottom Repair
If there are scratches or dents on the bottom of the snowboard, they should be repaired before waxing. Use a base repair agent (P-Tex) to fill the holes. Melt the P-Tex with a candle and drip the melted substance on the damaged area. Let the substance harden and scrape off the excess with a plastic scraper.
4. Waxing
Waxing is an essential part of snowboard maintenance, as it improves the board's glide and protects the base. Choose the right type of wax depending on the casting conditions (e.g. cold or warm wax). Melt the wax with a grease iron and spread it evenly on the bottom of the board. Give the wax time to absorb (about 20-30 minutes), then scrape off the excess wax with a plastic scraper. Finally, polish the base with a brush or cloth.
5. Bonds Review
Check that the ties are properly fastened and that there is no wear or damage. Make sure all screws are tight and the ties are in the correct position and adjustments.
