Skateboarding is a great hobby that offers both physical challenge and creative expression. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced skater, choosing the right skateboard is essential to ensure enjoyable and safe skating. In this guide, we go through the most important things you should consider when choosing a skateboard.
1. Board Type
The first step is to choose the right type of skateboard for your purpose. Skateboards can be divided into three main categories:
Street Skateboards
Street boards are the most common skateboards and are designed for doing tricks, grinding and jumping. They are usually 7.5 to 8.5 inches wide and have a durable and lightweight construction.
Ramp Skateboards (Vert Skateboards)
Ramp boards are slightly wider and sturdier than street boards, and they are designed especially for skating on ramps and halfpipes. The width is usually 8.5-9 inches, which provides better balance and stability.
Cruiser boards (Cruisers)
Cruisers are designed for comfortable and relaxed movement, not so much for tricks. They are often longer and wider and have softer tires that make for a smooth ride on different surfaces.
2. Board Width
The width of the board is one of the most important factors in the selection. It affects both the controllability and comfort of skating.
- 7.5-8.0 inches: Great for smaller skaters and doing tricks.
- 8.0-8.5 inches: The most common size suitable for versatile skating, both on the street and in parks.
- 8.5 inches and above: Provides more stability, suitable for ramps and cruising.
3. Board Length and Shape
The length and shape of the board also affect the ride feel. Most street boards are 28-32 inches long. The shape of the board, such as concave (curvature in the middle), affects how easily tricks are done and how well you control the board.
4. Forklifts
The jacks are the mechanism for attaching the wheels of the skateboard, and choosing them correctly is important. The width of the forklifts should be as close as possible to the width of the board. Also, make sure that the height of the forklifts is suitable for the tires - lower forklifts are suitable for smaller tires and tall forklifts for larger tires.
5. Tires
The size and hardness of the tires affect the driving experience.
- Smaller tires (50-54mm): Well suited for street tricks and technical skating.
- Larger tires (55-60mm): Better on ramps and rough surfaces.
- Softer tires: Better grip and a more comfortable driving experience on uneven surfaces.
- Harder tires: Suitable for tricks and more slippery surfaces.
6. Bearings
The quality of the bearings directly affects the speed and feel of the skateboard. Bearings are usually classified on the ABEC scale, but other markings such as Bones Red are also common and popular. High quality bearings provide better performance and durability.
